The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has commended Governor Umo Eno for approving a new salary and allowance package for medical workers in the state.

Governor Eno announced the wage review during the last executive council meeting, confirming that the new structure would take effect from November 1, 2025. The initiative is aimed at improving staff welfare and reducing the migration of medical professionals from the state.

Speaking at a press conference in Uyo on Sunday, the state NMA chairman, Dr. Aniekan Peter, praised the governor for his sustained commitment to healthcare development and for recognising the economic sacrifices of doctors.

Peter said the revised package represents a major morale boost for medical professionals who have long worked under inadequate remuneration. He noted that the decision aligns with the state’s effort to retain skilled personnel and strengthen public health delivery.

“In our communiqué, we expressed gratitude to His Excellency for the new welfare package for medical doctors and other healthcare workers in the state,” he said. “It is a long-awaited relief that reflects true appreciation for the hard work of medical professionals.”

The NMA chairman urged the Federal Government to replicate the Akwa Ibom model to avert future industrial unrest in the health sector.

He also used the occasion of the 2025 National Physicians’ Week to highlight the difficult working conditions facing Nigerian doctors, noting that a physician in the country often attends to more than 60 patients daily compared to about 20 in developed countries.

Peter disclosed that the week-long event will feature recognition awards in seven categories, including Doctor of the Year, Consultant of the Year, and Resident Doctor of the Year.
