The Kano State Government has approved two landmark initiatives aimed at transforming the state’s infrastructure and boosting access to electricity and affordable housing.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the administration announced plans to acquire a majority stake in the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and to construct 50 low-cost housing estates across 36 local government areas outside the metropolis.
According to the statement, the acquisition of a controlling interest in KEDCO is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s comprehensive plan to reform the state’s power sector—covering electricity generation, transmission, and distribution—to improve efficiency, accountability, and service delivery.
Okay News reports that the government believes greater control of KEDCO will drive industrial growth, stimulate job creation, and attract both local and foreign investments. The decision aligns with Kano’s vision of achieving reliable and sustainable power supply critical to its economic development.
The State Executive Council also approved the presentation and adoption of the new Kano State Electricity Policy under the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy. The policy provides a roadmap for energy security, renewable integration, and long-term sustainability in the state.
“The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains committed to transforming Kano into an energy-secure and business-friendly state that fosters innovation, industrialisation, and inclusive economic growth,” the statement said.
In a related development, the government announced the construction of 50 low-cost housing estates across rural and semi-urban areas to address the housing deficit and expand access to affordable homes for low- and middle-income earners.
Officials stated that each estate would include essential amenities such as roads, electricity, and water supply to ensure a sustainable and comfortable living environment.
“The housing project is designed to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for local contractors, artisans, and engineers while ensuring equitable development across all zones,” the statement added.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to invest in initiatives that directly improve the standard of living and promote inclusive socio-economic growth throughout Kano State.
