Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The announcement was confirmed on Monday after Atiku publicly registered as a member of the party in Yola, Adamawa State.

The move comes less than 24 hours after Atiku addressed ADC supporters and stakeholders at a meeting with the party’s leadership in Adamawa, where he declared that a “new political movement” had emerged across the country.

Speaking in Hausa during Sunday’s gathering, Atiku told the crowd that the ADC now represents the new home for his political base, a declaration that was met with loud cheers from supporters.

“In Nigeria as a whole, there is a new political movement, is it not so? Today, the new movement has taken us to where? To the ADC. So, the people of Adamawa and Nigeria, our new party is ADC and our new leaders in Adamawa are here seated,” he said.

The former Vice President, who requested acceptance from party members who joined the ADC earlier, asked: “After that, on Monday, I will be officially in the ADC. Before now, I was not in; you were there before me. Will you accept me?” The audience responded with a resounding “Yes.”

On Monday afternoon, Atiku posted photos on X holding his new ADC membership card, confirming the transition with a brief caption: “It’s official. – AA.”
