Sola Allyson, the widely admired Nigerian singer, has spoken candidly about the struggles in her marriage, saying the romantic image of lifelong harmony promoted by older generations never matched her experience.
Okay News reports that she shared the details during an interview with Oyinmomo TV, posted on YouTube on Friday.
Allyson said she and her husband now live separately, describing the arrangement as part of a more honest understanding of love, rather than the scripted expectations many couples are taught to embrace.
“I have married a husband, but we are not living together. I am in my house and he is in his. That is what we are talking about when we say love. We used to lie before, and the ones above us didn’t let us know that marriage is hard. They made it seem like as long as you love each other, you’ll live happily ever after; and that was not my experience,” she said.
The singer also reflected on her childhood, revealing that being raised in a troubled home shaped much of who she became. She described being caught between her parents as they used her to deliver messages loaded with hostility.
“To my parents, I was like bait. They never spoke directly but sent me back and forth with insults disguised as errands. They used me against each other, and it scared me,” she revealed.
Allyson, who has often been associated with inspirational and faith-driven music, also shared her view on feminism. She said the movement is not a rejection of men but a call for equal opportunity.
“Feminism is not saying that men are bad. It’s about giving women the same choices that men have. Let everyone choose what they want to do, and then we guide them,” she said.
Despite public perception, Allyson clarified that she does not consider herself a gospel artiste. Music, she said, is her identity, not a genre label.
“I have never called myself a gospel artiste. My name is Sola Allyson, and I am a singer,” she stated.
