Covenant University, one of Nigeria’s most prominent private universities, has announced plans to establish full-fledged faculties of Medicine and Law, marking a major academic expansion beyond its long-standing concentration on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics disciplines.

The development became public following an announcement made during Shiloh 2025, the annual global religious gathering organised by Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known globally as Winners Chapel. The institution is affiliated with the church and was founded in 2002 by its General Overseer, Bishop David Oyedepo.

Okay News reports that the expansion plan was disclosed by the founder of Money Africa, Olúwatósìn Olaseinde, who shared details of the announcement in a public post celebrating the university’s decision to venture into medical and legal education.

According to available information, the new academic units will include a College of Health Sciences and a College of Law. The College of Health Sciences is expected to house Medicine and Surgery, Anatomy, and Physiology programmes, while the College of Law will offer full legal education aligned with Nigerian and international standards.

“The Chancellor, Dr. Oyedepo, confirmed the development of a College of Health Sciences (Medicine & Surgery, Anatomy, Physiology) and a College of Law,” the report read.
“Chancellor Oyedepo announced plans to commence Law and Medicine programs, with a ₦6 billion budget allocated for facilities.
“Recent reports (September-October 2025) indicate that construction was set to begin/be underway for the two major projects, with job advertisements for faculty in the soon-to-be-established colleges appearing.”

The proposed faculties are expected to contribute significantly to addressing Nigeria’s critical shortage of healthcare professionals. Data from the World Health Organization indicates that Nigeria currently has approximately one doctor to every two thousand five hundred people, far below global recommendations. Legal education gaps have also been identified as a challenge within the country’s expanding population.

Covenant University has earned international recognition for academic excellence, ranking as Nigeria’s highest-rated university in the 2025 Times Higher Education World Rankings, where it placed within the eight hundred and one to one thousand global band. The institution is widely known for producing graduates with strong employability, particularly in technology and engineering sectors.

Reports further indicate that planning for the medical and law faculties began as early as 2023, with budgetary allocations approved and construction timelines refined through 2024 and into late 2025. Construction is expected to commence in September 2025, supported by existing infrastructure on the university’s Ota campus in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria.

The expansion signals a strategic repositioning for Covenant University as it seeks to broaden its contribution to national development through healthcare delivery, legal scholarship, and professional training.
