LAGOS, Nigeria — United Nigeria Airlines has unveiled two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft named in honour of celebrated Nigerian author Professor Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, during a ceremony attended by government officials, traditional rulers and aviation industry stakeholders.
Okay News reports that the aircraft were formally unveiled on Thursday at Nesto Aviation Services in Lagos, with Abia State Governor Alex Otti leading the ceremony. Governor Otti commended United Nigeria Airlines Chairman and Founder, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, for recognising the contributions of the two prominent figures, describing the gesture as a fitting tribute to their legacies and impact on society.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Okonkwo said the acquisition of the aircraft reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s aviation industry and was inspired by ongoing reforms in the sector. He explained that one aircraft was named after the late author of Things Fall Apart in recognition of his global literary influence, while the second honours Igwe Alfred Achebe for his leadership, corporate accomplishments and contributions to national development.
Aviation and Aerospace Development Minister Festus Keyamo highlighted the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen the aviation sector through collaboration with private operators. He also praised Governor Otti’s commitment to the Abia Airport project, revealing that the governor successfully pushed for the development of a full-scale airport instead of an airstrip and pledged counterpart funding to support the project.
Receiving the honour, Igwe Alfred Achebe expressed gratitude to United Nigeria Airlines, describing the recognition as meaningful and humbling. Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema also lauded the airline’s growth trajectory, expressing confidence that it could become one of the largest carriers in West Africa while urging Nigerians to support indigenous businesses.
The event concluded with the presentation of recognition plaques to several distinguished personalities and the official unveiling of the two Boeing 737-800NG aircraft, which the airline said would further strengthen its operations and expansion plans within Nigeria and across the region.
