AFCON 2025: Mahrez’s Penalty Sees Algeria Hold Off Burkina Faso in 1–0 Win

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Algeria recorded a vital 1–0 victory over Burkina Faso in their AFCON 2025 Group E game at Stade Moulay Hassan, sealing all three points despite intense late pressure from the Stallions.

Captain Riyad Mahrez’s 23rd-minute penalty proved decisive in a tense encounter that went down to the final whistle.

Okay News reports that Burkina Faso pushed relentlessly in the second half, peppering the Algerian defence with crosses and long-range efforts, but goalkeeper Luca Zidane and a disciplined backline stood firm. Chances from Dango Ouattara and Georgi Minoungou went begging as the Fennecs sat deep to protect their slender lead.

The result strengthens Algeria’s position in Group E, keeping their qualification hopes firmly on track, while Burkina Faso are left needing positive results in their remaining fixtures to stay alive in the tournament.
