MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has issued a strict 60-day ultimatum for the total completion and operational launch of the multi-billion naira 400-bed capacity Kashim Ibrahim University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH) in Maiduguri.
The directive was issued on Friday, June 5, 2026, during an intensive, multi-site project monitoring tour across the state capital, aimed at evaluating the final execution phases of the administration’s signature urban transformation initiatives.
Okay News reports that the flagship healthcare facility, located along the Maiduguri–Damaturu Road, is structurally complete, with over 90 percent of the engineering and architectural designs already finalized. The facility will serve a vital dual purpose: delivering high-grade tertiary medical services to residents of the North-East sub-region and functioning as the primary clinical training hub for medical students at the state-owned Kashim Ibrahim University (formerly Borno State University).
“The equipment meant for this hospital has all been purchased, procured, and delivered. You can see the level of development in the hospital, and the consultant has informed us that over 90 percent of the work required has been completed,” Governor Zulum stated during an interview with newsmen. To ensure immediate operational readiness once the structure is handed over, the state government has already completed the recruitment of an initial cohort of 350 specialized medical professionals, administrative executives, and healthcare staff.
Addressing long-term asset management, Zulum emphasized that the teaching hospital will operate under a strict, automated management model designed to maintain financial transparency and institutional self-sustainability without exploiting vulnerable populations. “Business as usual will not be feasible,” the Governor warned. “We cannot charge like a private hospital, but we also cannot make everything completely free. There must be a minimum threshold that will ensure the sustainability of the hospital.” The facility’s entire administrative, clinical billing, and inventory tracking systems will be fully digitized to eliminate leakages.
As part of the same monitoring loop, Governor Zulum inspected the ongoing construction of the 300-bed State Orthopedic Hospital situated along the Dikwa Road axis. Noting that the orthopedic site has reached 85 percent completion, he ordered the contractors to deliver the final keys within the next four months. The administrative monitoring tour also included technical site evaluations of the 4,000-capacity International Conference Center, the Post Office flyover project, the 2.5-kilometer Tandari–Kasuwan Shani–Neital road network, and the newly mapped internal pathways within the Maiduguri Industrial Hub.
