ABUJA, Nigeria — Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima has assured Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains unyielding in his commitment to ending the country’s security challenges, promising that the administration will secure the safe rescue of all children and citizens held captive by bandits and terrorists.
The Vice President gave the assurance on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the National Mosque in Abuja, immediately following a special Juma’at prayer service organized to kickstart the nationwide activities commemorating Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day anniversary.
Okay News reports that the special prayer session serves as the spiritual curtain-raiser for a week-long schedule of national events leading up to the main June 12 public holiday. Addressing State House correspondents, Shettima acknowledged the heavy sacrifices made by past pro-democracy heroes to safeguard civil rule and urged citizens to remain steadfast, hopeful, and deeply prayerful for national stability.
“I want to assure Nigerians of President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering commitment towards restoring peace and stability in the nation,” Shettima stated, using an optimistic metaphor to describe the country’s current difficulties. “No matter how long the night is, it must give way to the light of dawn. Stormy as the weather may be, it will not rain forever. The government remains irrevocably committed to restoring peace and stability in the nation.” He further emphasized that the socio-cultural bonds uniting Nigeria’s diverse ethnic populations vastly outweigh the political and geographic differences that threaten to fragment them.
In his sermon to the congregation, the Chief Imam of the National Mosque, Sheikh Haroun Eze, challenged leaders across all tiers of government to take more aggressive, decisive tactical steps to dismantle the criminal syndicates undermining public peace, describing absolute security as an indispensable prerequisite for economic development. The high-profile religious service was attended by a broad delegation of senior cabinet officials and political leaders, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola; APC National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; and the outgoing Registrar of the Joint Admissions and精神 Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede.
