Oyo Police Dismiss Report Claiming Abducted Schoolchild Died in Captivity

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

IBADAN — The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading reports claiming that one of the schoolchildren abducted during a recent attack in Ahoro-Esiele, Oriire Local Government Area, died while being held by kidnappers.

In a statement issued on Friday, the command said neither the police nor any security agency involved in the rescue operation had confirmed such a development. Authorities described the report as a deliberate fabrication aimed at creating panic, spreading fear among residents and undermining ongoing efforts to secure the safe return of the victims.

Okay News reports that the police accused the authors of the publication of relying on unverified claims and emotional narratives to manipulate public opinion and heighten anxiety. The command warned that the circulation of false information during sensitive security operations could jeopardize rescue efforts, inflict additional trauma on affected families and provide advantages to criminal groups.

The police said security agencies remain actively engaged in efforts to resolve the incident, assuring residents that operations are being conducted with professionalism, diligence and the necessary confidentiality. Authorities urged the public to remain calm and rely only on information released through official channels.

The command also cautioned bloggers, social media influencers, online content creators and media organisations against publishing or amplifying unverified security-related reports. It stressed that the spread of misinformation capable of causing public disorder is irresponsible and undermines public safety.

Residents were advised to disregard the report entirely and seek updates only from the Nigeria Police Force and other authorised government agencies. The Oyo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and pledged to provide verified information as developments emerge.
