Buhari Commends Tinubu’s Midterm Achievements, Urges Patience and Unity

As President Bola Tinubu’s administration marks its second anniversary in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his congratulations while advising Nigerians to temper their expectations regarding government reforms.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari emphasized that the “necessary reforms and desired changes” underway must not be undermined by “nettlesome domestic politics.”

Buhari acknowledged the significant challenges facing Nigerians, particularly the impact of poverty and inflation on the most vulnerable families. He stressed that tackling these issues cannot be the sole responsibility of the government, urging the private sector and citizens alike to contribute to national progress. “Reforms would achieve success gradually, not overnight,” Buhari noted, highlighting the need for sustained support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu’s administration has implemented major policy shifts, including ending petrol subsidies, liberalizing the naira, and repaying a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan in full. These measures, while necessary, have contributed to a severe cost-of-living crisis, testing public patience.

The APC recently reaffirmed its confidence in Tinubu by endorsing him as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, a move that comes amid defections from opposition parties. Buhari’s message concluded with a call for optimism and cautious expectations: “Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy. I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care.”
