EPL Clubs Vote to Keep VAR Next Season

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

In a decision made on Thursday, English Premier League clubs have voted to continue using the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, despite calls from some clubs to scrap it. The vote saw 19 clubs in favor of retaining VAR, with only one club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, voting against it.

The Premier League stated that while VAR has produced more accurate decision-making, improvements are needed to benefit the game and its supporters. Six key areas for improvement were identified, including maintaining a high threshold for VAR intervention, reducing delays, improving the fan experience, enhancing VAR training, increasing transparency and communication, and delivering a fan and stakeholder VAR communication campaign.

The introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) is also set to be introduced next season, providing quicker and consistent placement of the virtual offside line and enhancing the broadcast experience for supporters.

While VAR has been controversial in the Premier League, the league and its clubs are committed to improving the system and its reputation. The decision to retain VAR ensures that the technology will continue to play a role in the Premier League next season.
