MAN-U CONFIRMS SIGNING OF NEW GOALKEEPER SERGIO ROMERO

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

In the early hours of Monday morning, Manchester United confirmed the signing of a new goalkeeper: Argentina number one Sergio Romero.

It should come as no surprise that the Premier League giants have signed a new custodian with plenty of speculation about David De Gea and Victor Valdes.

De Gea has been heavily linked with Real Madrid and has just one more season remaining on his deal at Old Trafford.

Valdes meanwhile appears to have heavily fallen out of favour under Louis van Gaal for allegedly refusing to play in a reserve match last season.

Despite the fact Romero is an experienced goalkeeper, the feeling surrounding his transfer is that the Argentine is a direct replacement for Valdes rather than De Gea.

The 28-year-old played under Louis van Gaal at AZ Alkmaar and joins on a free transfer having come to the end of his contract at Sampdoria.

Sergio Romero is Manchester United’s fifth signing of the summer after Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin.
