MANCHESTER, England – Manchester United have officially announced the appointment of Michael Carrick as the club’s permanent head coach, following an extraordinary interim period that transformed the team’s season.
Okay News reports that the 44-year-old former United midfielder, who took over in early January 2026 after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, has signed a multi-year contract through June 2028, with an option for an additional year. The decision comes after Carrick guided the Red Devils from a dismal seventh place to a secure third-place standing in the Premier League, successfully guaranteeing UEFA Champions League qualification for next season.
Since replacing Amorim—whose tenure ended following a 31.9% win rate and a contentious public fallout with the club’s leadership—Carrick has revitalized the squad with a 4-2-3-1 tactical system. Under his guidance, United won 10 of his 15 league matches, accruing 33 points, more than any other team in the division during that span. His ability to restore the “feelgood factor” and re-integrate youth talents like Kobbie Mainoo reportedly won over both the dressing room and the club’s hierarchy, including CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox.
“This club means everything to me. We have momentum now, and I can’t wait to build on it with the players and staff,” Carrick stated during his unveiling at Old Trafford. He is expected to retain his backroom staff, including assistant Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, and Jonny Evans, as the club prepares for its final home game of the season against Nottingham Forest this Sunday.
The permanent appointment marks a strategic shift for co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS leadership, who prioritized tactical continuity and “hands-on” coaching over hiring a big-name external candidate. As United prepare for a return to Europe’s elite competition, the focus now turns to a crucial summer transfer window to support Carrick’s vision for a “vertical and intensive” attacking style reminiscent of the club’s historic identity.
