Marcus Rashford will be handed a chance to train with the England squad in the wake of Danny Welbeck’s recent injury, according to multiple reports.

ESPN FC reported last month that Rashford was not in consideration for a place in the Euro 2016 squad, but the serious knee injury to Welbeck led to a coaches’ meeting on Tuesday, when the Manchester United striker was discussed.

Previously, an Under-21 place had been the target for the start of next season and Rashford was recently left out of the under-21 squad for this summer’s Toulon tournament. A change in circumstances means that there is now a school of thought that he would benefit from the experience of being around the senior squad.

Welbeck’s blow, which will keep him out for nine months, caused the re-think of England’s attacking options. Rashford is still likely to miss out on the Euro 2016 squad, but the chance to train with the national team and appear in a friendly will allow him to make his case.

The 18-year-old has already scored seven times in 16 United appearances, having made his professional debut for the club in February against FC Midtjylland.
