Neymar: World Cup exit left me ‘psychologically destroyed’

By Muhammad A. Aliyu

Neymar, Brazil’s star forward, has admitted that the team’s elimination from the World Cup in a penalty shootout against Croatia has left him “psychologically destroyed”.

He revealed that the defeat has hurt more than any other loss in his career. Neymar scored a stunning individual goal in Friday’s match, which ended 1-1 after extra time, to equal Pele’s record of 77 goals for the national team.

“I am psychologically destroyed. It is definitely the defeat which has hurt me the most, which left me paralyzed for ten minutes after the match, after which I burst into tears without being able to stop,” the star forward said in an Instagram message.

“It is going to hurt for a very long time, unfortunately,” he added.

Neymar did not take a penalty in the shootout, which Croatia won 4-2, and has said that he may have played his last match for Brazil.
