By Adamu Abubakar Isa

WARSAW, Poland — Nigeria and Poland have agreed to deepen cooperation on internal security, border management, emergency response, and correctional reforms following high-level talks between officials of both countries in Warsaw.

The discussions were held between Nigeria’s Minister of Interior and his Polish counterpart, Marcin Kierwiński, Minister of Interior of the Republic of Poland, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance collaboration on key security matters.

As Okay News reports, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to improving border security through enhanced border management systems, intelligence sharing, and joint efforts to combat transnational crime.

The meeting also focused on strengthening cooperation in fire and rescue services, with both countries agreeing to exchange expertise, training opportunities, and best practices aimed at improving emergency response capabilities.

In addition, Nigeria and Poland pledged to work together on civil defence and the protection of critical national assets, with the goal of enhancing resilience and safeguarding vital infrastructure and public facilities.

A major outcome of the visit was the decision to establish a Technical Working Group tasked with developing a comprehensive framework for cooperation. The group will identify priority areas for partnership, set implementation timelines, and recommend mechanisms for sustained engagement between both countries.

The two nations also highlighted the importance of correctional reforms and the protection of human rights, agreeing that future cooperation would be guided by international standards and the rule of law.

The Nigerian delegation included Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani; Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap; Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi; Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel; and Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche.

Nigerian officials described the partnership as part of ongoing efforts under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to adopt global best practices and strengthen security, public safety, and institutional capacity across the country.
