Nigeria’s Olympic Hopes Dashed as Relay Team Disqualified

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

Nigeria’s Men’s 4x400m relay team has been disqualified from the ongoing Paris Olympics, dealing a significant blow to the country’s medal hopes. The team, which had finished second in the semifinal heat with a time of 2:59.81, was disqualified due to a lane violation.

The disqualification means that South Africa will take Nigeria’s place in the final. This setback comes after Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s world champion and world record holder in the 100m hurdles, failed to advance to the final.

Nigeria is yet to win a medal at the Olympics, which will conclude on Sunday. The country’s performance has been criticized by former Super Eagles Coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who attributed the poor showing to administrative issues rather than technical problems.

Onigbinde stated that the lack of good sports administration in Nigeria has hindered the country’s success in international sports competitions. He emphasized the need for administrators to separate politics from sports and focus on developmental programs that have yielded success in the past.
