President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his planned trips to South Africa and Angola for the G20 and AU-EU summits, citing urgent security concerns following the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and an attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
According to a statement released by the Statehouse, the President responded to a request from Kwara State Governor for enhanced security measures in the state. “President Tinubu has directed the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area, and has instructed the police to pursue the bandits responsible for the attack on worshippers,” the statement said.
Okay News reports that President Tinubu was scheduled to depart Abuja today to attend the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, followed by the 7th AU-EU Summit in Luanda, Angola. However, “disturbed by the security breaches in Kebbi State and Monday’s attack on worshippers, the President decided to suspend his departure,” the release added.
The President is awaiting detailed reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi State on his behalf to meet with affected families, as well as intelligence from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services regarding the Kwara attack.
“President Tinubu reiterates his directive to all security agencies to do everything possible to rescue the 24 schoolgirls abducted in Kebbi and ensure their safe return,” the statement emphasized.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, signed off on the statement released on November 19, 2025, reiterating the administration’s commitment to national security.
