Rivers Angels Clinch Historic 10th President Federation Cup Title in Dramatic Fashion

Rivers Angels solidified their status as Nigeria’s most successful women’s football club by capturing their 10th President Federation Cup title on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. The Port Harcourt-based side triumphed over Nasarawa Amazons in a nail-biting final, prevailing 4-2 on penalties after a remarkable comeback.

Despite dominating possession early on, Rivers Angels were stunned in the opening minutes. Nasarawa Amazons’ Rukayat Shobowale capitalized on a defensive lapse to score in the 7th minute, giving the Lafia side an early lead. Shobowale doubled the advantage in the 17th minute, putting Rivers Angels in a precarious position as the first half ended 2-0 in favor of Nasarawa Amazons.

Undeterred, Rivers Angels returned from the break with renewed determination. Their persistence paid off in the 57th minute when Taiwo Ajibade found the back of the net, reducing the deficit. Just five minutes later, former Flamingos midfielder Taiwo Afolabi delivered a superb lob to equalize, setting the stage for a tense finish.

With both teams unable to break the deadlock in regulation time, the match proceeded to a penalty shootout. Nasarawa Amazons faltered first, as Esther Adesoji missed the opening kick. Rivers Angels then converted three consecutive penalties, before their goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi denied Ayatsea Hembafan. In a fitting conclusion, Mgbechi stepped up to take the final kick, sealing a 4-2 victory for Rivers Angels.

Okay.ng reports that this latest triumph adds to Rivers Angels’ impressive list of Federation Cup victories, with previous wins recorded in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2024.

This victory not only cements Rivers Angels’ legacy but also highlights their resilience and championship pedigree in Nigerian women’s football.
