Security Guard Arrested for Illegal Refuse Dumping in Lagos

A security guard working at a phones and accessories store has been apprehended by Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) officials for illegally disposing of waste on the median strip of Akowonjo Road.

The arrest was announced by Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

According to Wahab’s post, “An individual identified as Andy, a security personnel employed by Slot Phones and Accessories at No.39 Sasha Road, Akowonjo, Egbeda, was observed illegally dumping refuse at the road median along Akowonjo Road.”

Officials investigating the business premises found an existing waste storage facility on site, yet no valid explanation was provided for why waste was being improperly disposed of on the road median.

The facility manager claimed the company is registered with an authorized Private Sector Participant (PSP) for waste collection services. However, they failed to provide any evidence of payments made to the PSP operator when requested.

Wahab confirmed that the suspect is now facing prosecution by LAWMA in accordance with relevant state environmental laws.

This incident follows a similar case earlier this month when another individual, identified as Mr. Chuks, was arrested for dumping more than 10 bags of refuse along Shasha Road in the same Akowonjo area.
