Shettima Backs Bill to Expand ICSAN Mandate

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

ABUJA, Nigeria – Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) of the federal government’s support in fast-tracking an amendment bill to modernize the institute’s operations.

Okay News reports that the Vice President gave this assurance on Friday during a visit by an ICSAN delegation led by its President, Mrs. Uto Ukpanah. The proposed legislation, currently before the National Assembly, seeks to rename the body to the Chartered Governance Institute of Nigeria (CGIN) and expand its legal mandate.

Congratulating the institute on its 60th anniversary, Shettima praised the organization for its long-standing commitment to professionalism and integrity. He stated that the Tinubu administration would engage key stakeholders to ensure the bill’s passage, allowing the institute to operate at a higher pedestal in line with global governance standards.

In addition to legislative support, the Vice President discussed the institute’s headquarters project in Lagos, suggesting that the development include income-generating ventures to bolster the body’s self-sustenance. He emphasized that the evolution of the institute is “long overdue” given the increasing expectations for corporate and public sector governance.

Mrs. Ukpanah noted that the institute’s diamond jubilee celebration is scheduled for June 26, 2026. She underscored the necessity of the amendment bill, arguing that the name and mandate must align with modern practices used in other international jurisdictions to better serve the Nigerian economy.
