ABUJA, Nigeria — Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Cotonou to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the inauguration ceremony of Benin Republic’s President-elect, Romuald Wadagni.
Shettima left the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Saturday ahead of the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Sunday, where leaders from across Africa and members of the international diplomatic community are expected to attend.
Okay News reports that Wadagni emerged winner of Benin Republic’s April 12 presidential election under the ruling coalition, succeeding outgoing President Patrice Talon after the completion of his constitutional tenure.
The 49-year-old former Minister of Economy and Finance is set to begin a new seven-year constitutional term as president.
Wadagni will also be sworn in alongside his running mate, Mariam Chabi Talata, who is expected to assume office as Vice President of the Republic.
Nigeria’s participation at the inauguration highlights the longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship between both neighbouring countries.
Although Nigeria and Benin Republic maintain close historical and cultural ties, relations between the two nations have at times faced challenges linked to border management, trade regulations, and regional security cooperation.
Presidential aides said Shettima’s visit is expected to strengthen bilateral discussions with the incoming administration, particularly in the areas of trade, economic collaboration, and regional stability within the ECOWAS sub-region.
