Nigerian singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, has shared his candid thoughts on the state of the gospel music scene, claiming that many gospel artists are simply in it for the money.

Speaking during a recent episode of Hip TV’s ‘Trending’, hosted by Pascal, the ‘Jesus boy’ didn’t hold back as he drew parallels between gospel musicians and their secular counterparts.

“The people that claim to be gospel artists or gospel ministers are just artists – they are in the business to make money just like us in the Afrobeats industry,” he said.

According to Spyro, the difference between gospel and secular artists is becoming increasingly blurred, especially when financial motivations take center stage.

Okay.ng reports that Spyro, known for blending faith with Afrobeats, also touched on the unique pressures female artists face in the entertainment industry. He praised Grammy-winning star Tems for maintaining her authenticity and decency, despite the pressure to conform to industry trends.

“There is a lot of pressure on female artists to do crazy things. Tems is holding it down decently yet she is one of the biggest [female artists] in the world right now. She is decent. She has it together,” he said.

“Sometimes, I’m just like, how is she able to do this? We should put Tems out there for our young ladies to be looking up to as a role model,” he added.

Spyro, who gained widespread recognition with his hit “Who’s Your Guy”, has often spoken about his Christian faith and the values that shape his music.
