West Brom Sign Gareth Barry From Everton

By Farouk Mohammed

West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday announced the signing of former England midfielder Gareth Barry from Everton for an undisclosed fee.

The veteran midfielder is signed to a one-year contract after the Toffees gave him leave to discuss with other clubs.

The 36-year-old, who missed the opening the game of the season due to an ankle injury is just five games away from beating Ryan Giggs’ record of premier league appearances.

“I want to come and help the team. That’s always been the same for me wherever I have played.

“I want to help the team improve, work hard and hopefully add quality,” Barry is quoted to have said on the Albion website.

Speaking on the signing, the fourth of the season for the club, Albion manager Tony Pulis said he is happy to have found someone to fill the hole left by the departure of Darren Fletcher.

“There was a big void when we lost ‘Fletch’ and Gareth will fill that void.

“He’s a fantastic player and I think his attitude towards playing is really gauged by the fact that Everton had offered him a two-year contract to stay there.

“He really wants to play and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”
