The Ogun State Government has expressed sorrow over a fatal road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, which occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, within the Makun axis of Ogun State, southwest Nigeria.
Okay News reports that the incident involved a sport utility vehicle travelling from Lagos toward Sagamu, which reportedly collided with a stationary truck.
Two male foreign nationals lost their lives in the crash, while Joshua and the vehicle’s driver survived and were taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Preliminary information indicates that the victims were confirmed dead at the scene.
Their remains were subsequently deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu, a major town in Ogun State, according to government officials.
In an official statement issued by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Information and Strategy, the state government described the accident as deeply painful and unfortunate, extending condolences to the families of the deceased.
“The Ogun State Government commiserates with the families of the victims and prays for the repose of the souls of the departed,” the statement said.
The government used the occasion to remind motorists of the importance of road safety, urging drivers to exercise caution and strictly observe traffic regulations, particularly during the festive period when vehicular movement is typically heavy.
It also called on security agencies and road safety authorities to intensify monitoring and enforcement along major highways across the state to prevent similar tragedies.
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors, linking the commercial capital, Lagos, to several states in the southwest and beyond. Accidents along the route have remained a recurring concern for authorities and road users alike.
