Former AGF Malami Enters Kebbi Governorship Race Amid N8.7 Billion EFCC Trial

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

BIRNIN KEBBI, Nigeria – Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has officially entered the 2027 Kebbi State governorship race by purchasing an expression of interest form.

Okay News reports that while political supporters have touted the former minister’s national network and experience, his declaration brings immediate scrutiny to his ongoing legal and accountability challenges.

Malami is currently facing trial alongside his wife and son over an alleged N8.7 billion fraud. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission recently presented nine exhibits against the family at the Federal High Court in Abuja, involving charges of money laundering and concealing proceeds of unlawful activities through various corporate accounts.

With his corruption trial adjourned until mid-May, Malami’s campaign is expected to be heavily shadowed by the courtroom proceedings. His entry into the contest alters the political dynamics in Kebbi State, setting the stage for a highly debated race focused on capacity, character, and political legacy.
