ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Democratic Congress zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term during its national convention on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
Okay News reports that a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Constituency, Afam Victor Ogene, moved the motion for the zoning arrangement in Abuja, Nigeria. Delegates attending the maiden edition of the party’s National Convention adopted the motion through a formal vote.
The resolution specifies that the presidential ticket will automatically transition to Northern Nigeria following the completion of the four-year southern term. This decision follows the party’s establishment of its internal power-sharing structure ahead of the next general election cycle.
The zoning agreement allows aspirants from the southern region to begin the process of purchasing presidential nomination forms. Figures eligible under this new framework include the former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi.
The National Convention where the motion was passed was held in the federal capital on Saturday.
