BRIGHTON, England — Veteran midfielder and former England international James Milner has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on a historic 24-year career in the English top flight.
The versatile 40-year-old confirms his departure from the game following the expiration of his contract with Brighton & Hove Albion, where he spent his final three domestic seasons.
Okay News reports that Milner retires as the ultimate modern symbol of Premier League longevity, having broken the all-time tournament appearance record earlier this year to finish with an unmatched milestone of 658 senior matches. Over more than two decades, he featured prominently for six elite English clubs: Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country,” Milner stated in an emotional social media address on Monday, June 1, 2026. “I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude, and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
Milner’s highly decorated trophy cabinet includes three Premier League titles—two clinched during Manchester City’s early breakout era in 2012 and 2014, and a historic crown with Liverpool in 2020. He also anchored the midfield during Liverpool’s 2019 UEFA Champions League triumph, alongside winning multiple FA Cup and League Cup medals. On the international stage, Milner earned 61 caps for the Three Lions, representing England across two UEFA European Championships and two FIFA World Cups.
